The reason for the zig-zag shapes is because of century old laws that gave townships the authority to designate school districts. This webpage has a map of the school districts in Washtenaw County and it's easy to see they cover large areas and don't follow any specific boundaries. Crime is pretty much a non-issue and your biggest worry would most likely be traffic as the roads are slow to be adjusted to the growing population.Īs for school districts, in Michigan, most are not conterminous with municipal boundaries. With the exception of the northeast corner of the township and some scattered farmhouses, most homes (or buildings in general) are no more than 10 to 15 years old. Every week, it seems another farm is being developed for a new subdivision of homes or businesses. Pittsfield could probably be more accurately described as a growing commuter suburb of Ann Arbor. Taxes are usually lower in townships than they are in cities, but that of course is due to there being less city service being provided. A "charter township" is a township that is next to a large incorporated city but is incorporated to prevent that city from annexing the township.
